Mom's Covid Quilt

It's a portal quilt-along that just happened to start at the same time as people in Washington state were encouraged to hang out at home. The Portal pattern is designed by Blair Stocker of  Wise Craft Handmade.

Week 1 -- Choose Your Fabrics

Since I'm not out and about I decided to hit my stash. One fabric hollered to be used and I found some I thought could join in the fun. Here's my preliminary pallet:

Ironically, the one fabric I started with is mostly buried in there. Maybe you'll be able to guess it in a few weeks.

Tall Tree (or what was I thinking!)

Last September, while in Gee Gee's Quilt Shop in Yelm, I saw a finished wall hanging. It was an amazing evergreen with buttons for ornaments. I thought I could whip it up in a couple days and have it ready for the holiday season.

When you quit holding your ribs and catch you breath, you'll hear me agree. What on earth was I thinking! Fast forward to March. After many interruptions, it's on the way to completions. Here are a few pictures from the journey.

So, paper piecing isn't my favorite and I changed the height of the tree stand so between those two obstacles, I may have been a bit slowed down. Here we are a couple days later.

There are a lot of pieces here.

Deciding on borders
The poinsettia print won out. Sometimes it really helps to
take a picture and see something from a distance.

The wonky one

Update!
I found a beautiful art quilt and decided to do a thing sort of like it. So here it is, all seams are intentionally crooked a bit.

Quilting pattern or child's doodle?

What kind of question is that? Obviously it's a free motion pattern!!! Flowers and stars with swirly centers. :) How could you ask, L?

Foxes and Birch Trees

Here are the first four blocks (now eight!!!). So many pieces but so very cute!

I still need to trim the block. Does anyone happen to remember where I put my 8 inch ruler Saturday? It is somewhere convenient to grab and do these blocks. Tomorrow I'll intersperse foxes in the birches.

And it's basically done; on its way to Sweden. The girls can finish the border. Here it is!
